Haloperidol decanoate
Indications/Uses
Acute & chronic schizophrenia; mania & hypomania; organic psychosis; agitation in psychotic illness; explosive hyperexcitability & extreme hyperactivity in childn; motor ties & vocal utterances of Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome, anxiety neurosis & tension states; mixed neuroses w/ features of depression.
Dosage/Direction for Use
50 mg IV/IM, can be given >2 times in 24 hr. Adult 1 mg for rapid emergency control. May be given up to 30 mg IM. May repeat further doses every 6 hr until control is achieved. Childn Maintenance: 0.05 mg/kg daily. May initiate treatment at ½ the dose level working up to maintenance dose when control is not urgent.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Severe toxic CNS depression or comatose states from any cause. Parkinson's disease.
Special Precautions
Not approved for patients w/ dementia-related psychosis. Avoid high dosage; reduce dosage if extrapyramidal dysfunction occurs. Pregnancy. Do not use during lactation. Elderly. Debilitated persons.
Adverse Reactions
Extrapyramidal symptoms, dystonia, tardive dyskinesia/dystonia, insomnia, restlessness, anxiety, euphoria, agitation, drowsiness, depression, lethargy, headache, confusion, vertigo, grand mal seizures, exacerbation of psychotic symptoms eg, hallucinations, & catatonic-like behavioral states (w/drawal &/or treatment w/ anticholinergics); mild & transient leukopenia & leukocytosis, decreased RBC count, anemia, or lymphomonocytosis; impaired liver function &/or jaundice; maculopapular & acneiform skin reactions; lactation, breast engorgement, mastalgia, menstrual irregularities, gynecomastia, impotence, increased libido, hyperglycemia, hypoglycemia & hyponatremia; anorexia, constipation, diarrhea, hypersalivation, dyspepsia, nausea & vomiting; dry mouth, blurred vision, urinary retention, diaphoresis & priapism; laryngospasm, bronchospasm & increased depth of respiration; cataracts, retinopathy & visual disturbances.
Drug Interactions
Potentiated action of methyldopa & CNS depressants including alcohol. Tranquilizers.
